Kardashev 1 civilization
WHAT
Kardashev Type 1 civilization, as proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, represents a society that has achieved complete mastery over the energy resources of its home planet. This scale measures technological advancement based on energy harnessing capabilities, with Type 1 denoting the ability to capture and utilize approximately 10^16 watts—the equivalent of all incoming solar radiation, geothermal heat, tidal forces, and other planetary energy sources. Unlike our current Type 0 status, where humanity relies on inefficient and finite resources like fossil fuels, a Type 1 civilization would integrate advanced technologies such as global solar arrays, fusion reactors, and atmospheric energy extraction to power every aspect of life sustainably and without waste. Earth today is estimated to be around Type 0.7 with ~ 20 TWh of production, reflecting significant technological capability but fragmented, inefficient, and uneven energy access. We need to produce ~ 10,000 TWh to become K1 so an approximate 500x from the current situation.
